I have a one year Thai business visa and a Thai work permit. I plan to visit Australia next month for a holiday. I am aware that to protect my visa I need to go the immigration bureau and obtain a re-entry permit which allows me to leave Thailand and return and my business visa shall be covered, but people are telling me that I need a re-entry stamp to cover my Thai work permit. Is this correct?

You do not need re-entry stamp to cover your Thai work permit. You only need a re-entry stamp for your business visa which you already have done.
