I am interested in getting a British Holiday visa for my Thai girlfriend. My aim is Christmas 2010. It is very hard for me to communicate with her on the phone as her English is not great, and I cannot explain to her what she needs to do.

Christmas is only 5 months away so it will be prudent to start the visa process as soon as possible. My advice is to start straight away. Then if there are any problems or documents that you do not have, time will be on your side and you will have time to obtain everything.
Every time your girlfriend wants to visit you, a new visa application is required with all of the up to date documents and evidence. After the first application we advice to continue keeping all of the evidence that you have been working on and updating the visa file throughout the year. By doing this getting a visa becomes easier as you are prepared in advance.
One point that is worth remembering from the start is that after 3 or 4 holiday visas are issued, your Thai girlfriend that may be refused future holiday visas as the immigration could suggest that she is taking advantage of the holiday visa and is not infact visiting you as a tourist. At that stage you can look at moving forward with your relationship and marrying. Then you can apply for a spouse visa.
